Democracy gives the illusion it works, not because it picks the
best leaders, but because it picks the most average leaders. So it
is with religious leaders: And like democracy, the purpose is not
so much progress as preservation of the old.
The preservation of myth and ideology trumps critical thinking.
This becomes culture. And culture is nothing but the surrender
of critical thinking to the pressure of other’s beliefs.
Most people actually do believe in ideals but cannot articulate it.
The substantiation of those ideals only gets traction when others
share those ideals. And these ideals get further traction when
they find a loudspeaker to broadcast them. The loudspeaker
becomes the new messiah who voices their ideals.
Hence successful religions tend to have human prophets or
messiahs, and when a demagogue changes his beliefs, the
beliefs of his followers change accordingly.
